Bluebird License Plates

Hi Barb and all,
I hope someone answers you about bluebirds staying in Michigan
for the winter. I can tell you that as Fawzi says they stay
here in NY all winter where it gets very cold. And not just
a pair or two. They form a pretty big flock around here ( I
saw many in the woods while out walking this morning ) and were
here all last winter. I think the main thing is food supply.
We have many Red Cedars around here and they eat the berries
of those during the coldest weather.
I was interested to see the license plate from TN. Bluebirds
are the state bird here in NY as Fawzi says and although our
normal license plate does not have them on a special license
plate can be purchased for a small fee with a beautiful male
Eastern Bluebird in flight on it. It also says "conserve
open space" at the bottom. I wonder if any other
states offer this. If anyone in NY wants to get one email me
and I will find the number to call for you. I love having mine
on - it feels special to get into my car with those plates on!
Best wishes
Jane

When I asked about Bluebirds in Michigan and if they stay here
all winter - I got no replies at all.

I live in NY State and have a beautiful Peterson bluebird license
plate on my car. It costs extra (some funds go to preserve open
habitat) but is well worth the money. I have had many a conversation
with total strangers about bluebirds and their needs - they
see my plate in parking lots and ask questions, which has to
be a good thing for our blues. If you live in NY, ask about
this plate at your motor vehicles office.

Jane - Here in TN we have had Bluebird license plates and I
have one on each of my vehicles. It was the first specialty
license plate in TN and has been responsible for raiseing 2.5
million dollars for non-game conservation under the plate as
on Fawzi attachment is 'Watchable Wildlife' Sure does make us
proud to drive our cars with this plate on it.

The Missouri Conservation has 3 plates that people can get.
One is a bluebird ( the state bird) one has a fish and one a
deer. Have seen the fish and deer on cars and I have the bluebird
with the letters brder on it. Someone in another city has birder.
The boxes I have in the treatment plant all face either south
or east. Guess thinking about it the problem may be the amount
of mowed grass around the area. I gave the guys that work there
a martin house and they put it up and last year a bluebird did
nest in it but do not know about this year.
We do have bluebirds around all year. I never see them in my
yard but Jan 1999 they came to my feeder and ate sunflower chips
and then again this year did the same but were around longer
this year that last.
There have been 3 birds the last 2 years.

That's a good question. I'd start by calling the state agency
that issues license plates. There should be a procedure to follow.
It will probably vary state to state.
I'll try to find time to call and find out what Nevada requires.

Hi Haleya, here is some more information about getting special
plates issued. I checked the state website for Nevada and found
the info at the above url (it's about 3/4 of the way down a
very long page). This page also has links for DMV's in all 50
states, so it might be a fast way to find your own state's web
page.
In Nevada, the state will issue a special plate for an organization
or cause if they get 250 requests. Once 250 people write a letter
of intent to purchase the plates if they are issued, the next
step would be to get legislative approval. I imagine the approval
would be routine.
In reading through the web site I also found a section on souvenir
plates. It is possible to buy a plate as a souvenir -- can't
be used on a vehicle. Maybe, if we get a NV plate with our state
bird on it -- the bluebird -- people from other states could
order souvenir plates. All you bluebird lovers out there could
start a collection, one plate from each state that uses a bluebird.
Anyone willing to send me a letter of intent?
250 requests is not a lot. I work with kids; I might propose
this as a project to teach them about public process.

Hi Fawzi,
Here in Virginia, we have a license plate with the Cardinal
on it, because it is our state bird. I wonder if these states
you listed and others have mentioned, have the Bluebird as THEIR
state bird and that's how they got the license plate?
If not, then someone or some group probably did some lobbying
to get this beautiful bird on the license plate.

Hi Joyce,
Haleya's questions about how to get a bluebird license plate
spurred my interest and I went to the web site for Nevada's
DMV. I can't remember if our state bird is the Western or Mountain
Bluebird - but it is a bluebird. It hasn't been used on a license
plate yet. Unfortunately we are too late to get a bluebird on
the regular NV plate. The state already has its new design.
However our state does allow groups to issue special plates,
and the advantage of these is that part of the registration
fee is given to the group sponsoring the plate.
Other states may have similar options. I sent a Message with
the url for NV DMV.
The page has links to all 50 states.

Ohio has a Wildlife license plate that has a Cardinal (our
state bird) or a Bald Eagle. I have the Cardinal plate, but
my plate says "BLBIRD". I have had several conversations
started over this.

Hi Everyone,
The state of Idaho has a few wildlife license plates but the
first license plate to be issued was the Mountain Bluebird (it's
also the state bird). I have the great honor of working under
Al Larson who is responsible for lobbying to get the Mountain
Bluebird on the license plates.Al's one vehicle has his plate
as reading 1....I think it's fantastic!

I reside in the state of Mo. and our state bird is the Bluebird.
We can special order Conservation Bluebirds personalized plates.
I have picked out three choices but am open to suggestions for
the personalized plate name. The name can be 6 characters long
or 5 characters with a dash. Any/all suggestions would be appreciated;
as I am sending in my application to the MRV this weekend.
Thanks, Lee in Missouri

Hi everyone,
Thanks for all the suggestions for the personalized plates--I
really got some good ones. I forgot to mention that the Conservation
plates have a beautiful picture of the EABB on the left side
of the plate with, of course, the personlized name. My 6 choices
were as follows: BB4EVR, SVRBB'S, LVBLU'S, EABB-LV, LUVBB'S
& OUR BB'S. I would be happy with any of them.
Will keep everyone posted on the final decision of the Dept.
of Rev.
Thanks again, Lee in Missouri

Herb,
We have one in Tennessee. It's a specialty plate that costs extra, but the money(so they say) goes for Wildlife Resources. The plates say "Watchable Wildlife" with an Eastern Bluebird sitting on what looks like a Dogwood branch. It's a very nice looking design that I proudly display.

Herb & DR & fellow Bluebirders,
New York State also has a "Bluebird" specialty plate. The Bluebird is our
state bird. It has a gorgeous picture of an Eastern Bluebird and the words
"Conserve Open Space." We wouldn't be without it!

Hello all,
Everyone got me wondering if we had a bluebird plate. Unfortunately, I didn't find one for our state. Below is an interesting fact I found on the wisconsin.gov website.
State Bird: Robin (Turdus migratorius) A welcome sign of the coming spring, the red-breasted robin won the hearts of school children across the state, who voted to name it the state bird in 1926-27.

I have a major work deliverable due today, so I decided to do a new webpage on bluebird license plates instead. See http://www.sialis.org/license.htm.
Surprised Nevada still doesn't have one. Apparently you only need 250 requests to get the process started - there were some emails on the Bluebird_L back in 2000 about it. The Mountain Bluebird is the Nevada State bird after all. They have license plates on a bunch of other special things like rodeos and the Hoover Dam….
