Subject: Interbreeding of Bluebird Species & Spring Return

Hello gang! Sherry here in cool Osoyoos, BC elev 2150' on the border with Washington State directly north of Wenatchee

It's been a while but I have been lurking and was getting almost to the point of dropping out ... then more Kridler Kronicles, Springer Specials, Wendell Wisdom started shining through and with the return of the bluebirds - how could I resist?

Gary asked about interbreeding of bluebird species... we in BC have seen Western and Mountain mixes on the northern extremes of the breeding territory. In the past few years, Western Bluebirds have been slowly extending their range. Where there have been the odd sightings of Westerns, monitors have reported a Western female on a nest with a male Mountain in attendance. It is rare, but it obviously happens. I have a slide of a Mountain/Eastern hybrid taken (I believe) in Manitoba or Saskatchewan. The slide is from the NABS presentation selection if I am not mistaken. Perhaps Doreen Scriven can help out here.

Western Bluebird numbers were higher than usual in our Christmas Bird Counts (not on my teams unfortunately) and Mountain Blues were also on the Osoyoos/Oliver count. They came back to my property on January 31st - a record early sighting for me. Watched 4 pairs at my neighbors yesterday morning. They are checking out nestboxes but it is far too early for nesting at this point.

Nothing has been deposited in the boxes and I have never observed what I would consider claim straws. I agree with the comments though that the birds habits will vary from area to area. The song of my Mountains is slightly softer than any I have heard recorded. I have read that bluebirds sing in the early morning and not generally later in the day ... that has not been my experience. My bluebirds sing whenever I come out of the house and they are nearby. I think we all tend to put human traits on "our" birds - and I for one have no problem with that at all!

Spring REALLY is coming! Hope to meet many of you in Ohio in June at the NABS conference. Sherry Linn

PS - thanks for the info on the Backyard Bird Count ... I thought I'd missed getting my data in and am glad I can still add it!

Please help us determine whether this pix of one my nesting female EABL is simply a drab adult or some hybrid, mutant or whatever!!! You can view the photos at:

Also, after studying the slides taken at Rt. 116, I think it is possible your bird could be a Southwest race female as seen in the Kauffman guide.

Al, According to a birding book that I have, The Nature Company Guides by Forshaw, Howell, Lindsey and Stallcup, the Western BB has a blue throat and some red on back while the Eastern BB is bright blue above and reddish below. Allene of the Bluegrass State

I think anything is possible. If the trend of the weather can change, and the killer bees migrate 100miles North each year, then why can't the birds cross into each other's territory? Don't let anyone tell you what you didn't see. Keep records, take pictures, document, who knows, you might be a first in something. Allene of the Bluegrass State

Does the bird you believe is a Western Bluebird have that blueish/grayish color on the belly? The eastern bluebird's belly is pretty white.
