Subject: NABS2001: NOTICE TO AFFILIATE GROUPS
A special opprtunity exists for NABS'Affiliate groups to be represented at
three special TRAINING WORKSHOPS to be conducted on Thursday afternoon of the
24th Annual NABS Convention in Columbus, Ohio from June 21 thru 24 at the
Airport Radisson Inn and Conference Center (adjacent to the Columbus
International Airport). These workshops are entirely new to the NABS' convention
scene. They will be held during the afternoon of the "light" day of the
conference which is normally reserved for a Board meeting and set up. These
three sessions, which will run consecutively, are, as follows:
* Session #1: Jim Williams, Editor of BLUEBIRD, discusses NEWSLETTERS
including development, writing, editing, layout, production and distribution of
periodical publications for affiliate groups;
*Session #2: THE COUNTY COORDINATOR SYSTEM as a method of administration and
maintaining contact with bluebirds on a state-wide basis. Steve Eno and Chuck
Finley of Bluebirds Across Nebraska will host this session. Theirs has been a
very successful state group expanding through their unique county coordinator
system;
*Session #3: "GROWING YOUR AFFILIATE GROUP." Darlene Sillick presents a
variety of techniques and ideas useful in the operation/expansion of affiliate
groups. Special attention will be paid to the use of training sessions/short
courses/workshops/exhibits and annual meetings as methods of creating state-wide
interest in bluebirding.
All three of these sessions are designed for existing NABS' Affiliates but
should also be of great interest to those who are giving consideration to the
creation of new affiliate groups all across the continent. Please plan to make
this a BIG part of your attendance at this year's NABS2001: A BLUEBIRD ODYSSEY
in Ohio in June.
Further information on the Convention can be found at:
www.nabluebirdsociety.org/annual2.htm. Special rate reservations can be handled
directly through the Radisson at 614/475-7551. Call now...over 50 reservations

Subject: "Texas Bluebird Society" - What do we need?
Harold & All,
The goal for "Texas Bluebird Society" is to start several "regional chapters"
on the same day or week (which will bring much media attention) in Fall 2001 -
so newcomers will have time to learn a bit and get a nestbox built or purchased
(maybe a Christmas gift request!) and installed by February 1st.
All who have nest boxes in Texas may assist by registering data on their
cavity nesters (not just bluebirds) with North American Bluebird Society
(http://www.bluebirdtrails.org/tbt/TBT_Login.asp) after joining NABS.
To get started, the Texas organization needs volunteers who will take on
short-term or long-term tasks such as:
1.. Organize details for a meeting in one the regions of Texas
2.. Serve as board member / officer for Texas organization
3.. Serve as officer of a regional chapter
4.. Maintain electronic list of individuals throughout Texas who are interested
in joining the organization
5.. Provide funds for the organization
6.. Provide legal assistance for organization
7.. Provide CPA assistance for organization
8.. Join me in attending NABS Convention in Columbus 6/21 - 6/24 where we can
brainstorm, learn, increase excitement about the upcoming organization ...
9.. Provide bluebird-related door prizes for start-up meetings
10.. Join NABS Speakers Bureau
For those of you who are praying people with prayer lists, perhaps you'll pray
for laborers for this cause. =20

Subject: NABS 2001 Conference
I love surrounding myself with the beauty of nature.
When I'm not working or writing posts, I'm almost always in the forest or
field or swimming in the lake. My Television has been turned on for less than
two hours in the last 7 years and there are many days when I don't go beyond the
borders of the secluded forest that surrounds my home.
Hotels, banquets, lectures and large gatherings of people in a conference
setting aren't my ideas of a great time. And, this must have been obvious to
fellow bluebirders at the conference because before I was at the hotel one hour,
they had already confiscated my truck keys to keep me from making an early
departure.
But the initial shock and following excitement of talking face to face with
people I've written to and talked to on the telephone during the past two years
about those things that interest me most caused me to stay up past 2:30 in the
morning even though I had just completed the 12 hour drive from Georgia to Ohio
a few hours earlier.
When I went to bed I just knew I'd never get up three hours later at 5:30 AM
to get ready for the first field trip. But, I did. Without an alarm clock.
I could summarize the events, list the names of speakers, describe the
awesome material they presented, and list the many people that attended, many
whose work with which we all are familiar. But there is about as much chance of
being successful in describing the excitement and joy that grows out of a
gathering of people in love with those little blue birds as there is of being
successful in describing the feeling we got when we saw those first tiny
bluebird chicks in a nest box or watched them fledge from one of our nest boxes
for the first time, or the last time. It isn't possible.
Not only was it exciting to share the joys of bluebirding with other people
that love them, but it was educational as well. I dare say everyone learned
much, even those most well recognized nationally in the field of bluebirding. I
could begin writing all I learned but this post would turn into a book so I will
instead share those discoveries and new insights through my future posts as they
become relevant to future discussion.
I will, however, make special mention of one visitor at the NABS 2001
Conference.
I wasn't even aware he had attended until I was ready to depart. The back
door of the hotel closed behind me as I lugged my baggage to the truck. There
were starlings on the pavement directly in front of me. These flew a short
distance to perch on a cyclone fence separating the hotel property from a road
and an adjacent office park.
One starling, apparently recently fledged, had a tough time keeping its
balance on the fence. I thought of rushing it to see if I could capture it. But
before I took two more steps they had increased the distance between us.
There were the sounds of traffic, house sparrows and starlings and a few
other birds. But wait a minute. Somewhere between all these sounds, wasn't that
the barely audible song of the Eastern Bluebird?
Couldn't be. Must be my imagination. Or, someone playing a recording of the
bluebird's song one last time before departing the hotel.
But, if it were a bluebird, it would have come from across the road. So, I
walked in that direction, just to make sure I was hearing things. I listened for
a while. Again, I heard what seemed to be the right pitch but it was drowned out
even more so than before by the incezzznt chatter of house sparrows and passing
cars. My doubt increased but I continued straining my ear.
Suddenly, the city sounds paused and the clear warble of the Eastern Bluebird
echoed from the direction of the office park across the road. And even more
surprising, as I fixed my gaze in the direction of the song, a male bluebird
flew to the top of a light tower.
No one would believe this. I saw it and was having a hard time believing it
myself. I ran inside the hotel and there, in the restaurant, was Steve Eno.
We both scurried back to the parking lot where I had heard and seen the
bluebird. And, we listened. And, we watched. But nothing even resembled the
sound of a bluebird.
I had retrieved my binoculars from the truck and I studied the shrubs,
building ledges, light towers, and ornamental trees for a bluebird. And we
watched and listened but nothing sounded anything like a bluebird and only
starlings flew about.
We walked a short distance to view another part of the office park but all we
saw were more starlings. But, wait, wasn't that the remnants of a nearly drowned
out song of a bluebird? Steve had heard it too but wasn't sure. But, a moment
later, as before, the clear warble of the Eastern Bluebird pierced the city
sounds leaving no doubt our friend had joined us for the 2001 NABS Conference.
If bluebirds mean a lot to you, I guarantee you will treasure the experience
of the 2002 NABS Conference. Be there!

Sparks, Club President, had a couple of small fires going in the fireplaces and
it smelled so good. We could see the woods and ravines thru the windows. The
shelter house had a lot of large open windows. It just poured down raining all
morning but then the sun came out some while we had the picnic. Of course, we
all just stayed in the shelter house which was more like a castle than a
shelter.
There were a couple of ladies from northern Indiana that I sometimes "talk"
to on the Bluebird List and their families. Also, Alicia Craig, who works for
Wild Birds Unlimited, was there and gave a wonderful presentation. It was so
nice to meet everyone in person. The food was great and it was a nice time! I
won a Peterson BB box--door prize. The new BB box will come in handy as I want
to pair two of my boxes next year.
Much thanks to Dan and his wife and to the other Bluebirders who worked to
put this together. Looking forward to next year's picnic!
By-the-way, it sounds like our BB club had fantastic results this year but
Dan will probably tell you about that.

For those in the Western NY area that may be interested:
The New York State Bluebird Society is sponsoring a Bluebird Workshop on
Saturday, April 6 to be held at the Beachhead VFW in Alexander. The meeting will
begin at 1pm and will feature a presentation by Rich Wells, past president of
the Bluebird Society. The topic: "Attracting Bluebirds and Other Cavity Nester
to Your Nestboxes".
I don't know how many WNYers are on the list, but if anyone wants more info
feel free to contact me off list.
Good to hear that there are BBs out there doing well and nesting season is
off to a start for some. Our weather here has been "haphazard" lately and all
"our" birds seem to be in winter mode - surviving, but not attempting to nest.
Redwinged Blackbirds are back in larger numbers than last year and so are the
Robins, but I'm still seeing a lot of Juncos and Tree Sparrows (until they leave
the feeders, I won't feel that spring is really here).

2002 MBA Spring Fling Migrates Eastward:
Promises to be a Memorable Event
On Saturday, May 11, 2002, starting at about 10:00 a.m., the Mazzzchusetts
Bluebird Association will kick off the new season by holding it’s second Spring
Fling in Historic Easton, Mazzzchusetts (the Town celebrated it’s 275th
anniversary in 2000!). Easton is home to five Henry Hobson Richardson original
designs. This is the largest Richardson collection anywhere in the world. H.H.
Richardson is considered to be the most famous 19th century American architect.
The Event will be held in a 100-plus year-old barn located just off one of
the first official roads in New England--Bay Road?which runs through South
Easton. The barn is owned by MBA members Lyn and Ed White, who have graciously
allowed us to borrow the barn, which sits right next door to a beautiful 1000
acre land conservation area.
Although the location will change from year to year, the purpose of the
Spring Fling is the same: To connect with other kindred spirits; to share the
collective knowledge and wisdom accumulated throughout seasons passed; to
discuss exciting new possibilities and methods of improving overall trail
success in the season now upon us. The Event is informal, fun and informative.
It will give that curious part of you an opportunity to get a really good look
at how another trail is managed. This year, we’ll focus on what worked and what
did not in prior years experience on the trail. We will then stretch our legs
and tour a fraction of the 1000 acres of conservation land that abuts our hosts’
property. A brown bag lunch will follow at the barn (beverages provided).
Finally, MBA member and active Board participant Dr. Herb Everett will take us
on a tour of his impeccably-maintained trails set in some of the most stunning
locations. His hard work is paying off: Each year his nesting bluebird
population increases dramatically, along with his fledgling population. Herb is
fortunate to have a Wild Birds Unlimited located right in Town. The store’s
owner, Bob Hurd, provides invaluable support (mostly in the form of wholesale
mealie worms) to Herb.
Please take a look at the insert in this edition of MA Blue (or our website:
http://herper.tripod.com/mbahome.html ) for the complete scoop on this year’s
Fling. It contains directions (including a map) and an approximate itinerary for
the day?we want to keep the structure pretty loose. Any questions about how to
find the Event should be directed at Herb: Telephone No.: 508-238-2141 or
email:heverett"at"attbi.com. Questions about the Event itself should be directed
at Robin Cross, phone no.: 617-489-8871, or e-mail: Robinacross"at"hotmail.com.
As always, we encourage your ideas for our events. Actually, we’d really love to
hear your ideas so please write or e-mail us at the MBA address provided in the
newsletter. See you on May 11th!

He was very knowledgeable and informative. Thanks, Dan.
